The Morning Roar: LAPD Tests Drones, A New "Homegrown Terrorism" Taskforce, and Britain's First Secret Trial

Welcome to the Friday Roar!LAPD Testing Drones For "Tactical Event" Usage Los Angeles, where both Editor Marc and I live, isn't known for having the best police force in the nation. In fact, the news that is most often covered by the national media is that of beatings, which of course brings a rosy glow to the cheeks of every man, woman and child in the city. Instead of focusing on better serving the public, winning their trust and easing their heavy hand, the LAPD is instead borrowing some drones from the Seattle PD (who have become a model for the Big Brother surveillance state) to test out their capabilities for use in "tactical events."Take it away CBS/LA:

Police may soon begin using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during manhunts, standoffs and other “tactical events”, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said Thursday. The LAPD obtained two UAVs – otherwise known as drones – from the Seattle Police Department last week at no cost to the city, according to officials. The Seattle Police Department originally purchased the Draganflyer X6 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles using federal grants. The drones are currently being kept at an undisclosed federal law enforcement facility “pending review by the LAPD and the Board of Police Commissioners” and the public, according to the LAPD.

"Draganflyer" you say? I worry enough about what horrible fate awaits all of the likable characters in Game of Thrones, and the dragons in that program enough as it is. Now I have to worry about Dragans in real life as well? At least I can unsubscribe from HBO...Holder Creates New Taskforce to Combat "Homegrown Terrorists"Attorney General Eric Holder (a fan favorite) has created a new task force, or resurrected one, to combat "homegrown terrorism." The main focus will be American citizens and immigrants who have been "radicalized through the internet."From the Liberty Crier:

Attorney General Eric H. Holder announced on Tuesday that the Justice Department is creating a task force to combat the “escalating danger from self-radicalized individuals within our own borders.”The domestic terrorism task force was originally established in 1995 after the Oklahoma City bombing to disclose information about domestic threats. It was scheduled to meet the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, which is when the country shifted its focus to fight terrorism overseas.“But now, as the nature of the threat we face evolves to including the possibility of individual radicalization via the Internet, it is critical that we return our focus to potential extremists here at home,” Holder said in a weekly video, according to NBC News.

Why that doesn't sound like the NSA will be tracking all of our online actions again and then black bagging us in the night without any trial at all!Britain Holds First Secret Trial To Outrage of NationThe Daily Mail takes a lot of flack from various audiences (though rarely from me), however there can be no fault found in their reporting of this atrocity that is taking place on the English isle. Two men accused of terrorism are being taken to trial, and for the first time (as far as we know) the trial will be held in secret.

For undisclosed reasons of national security their identities, as well as details of their alleged crimes, will not be heard in public. The very existence of the trial can be disclosed today only because the Daily Mail fought with other media groups to have the reporting restrictions lifted. The casting aside of the centuries-old doctrine of open courts sparked anger last night.‘To hold trials entirely in secret is an outrageous assault on the fundamental principles of British justice,’ said Clare Algare of Reprieve.‘This Government’s dangerous obsession with secret courts seems to know no bounds. Unless it is resisted, we risk ending up with a justice system that will not be worthy of the name.’Keith Vaz, Labour chairman of the Commons home affairs committee, said: ‘For a parliamentary democracy with our reputation for a fair legal system, this sets a very dangerous precedent.

There is a very lengthy article that goes into more detail, but without delving further into it, this is a terrifying movement, not only for the British citizenry but also for the free world. As this type of thing is adopted, it becomes accepted as sanctioned globally. Soon the UN will support this secrecy (not that the UN is worth pissing on were it on fire) and any outrage will be subsequently quelled or brushed aside.
